A Phase I–II Study on the Toxicity and Therapeutic Efficacy of 5-Fluorouracil in Combination with Leucovorin and Cisplatinum in Patients with Advance…
1990
5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) has been the treatment of choice for colorectal carcinoma with an overall response rate of about 20%. Recent studies have shown that folate (LV) can increase 5-FU therapeutic efficacy, achieving about a 40% response rate without a clear impact on survival. Cisplatinum (CDDP) is usually inactive in colorectal carcinoma, but the association with 5-FU results in a synergistic antineoplastic effect. A phase I-II study was done to assess the maximally tolerated dose (MTD) of CDDP in association with 5-FU + LV. The MTD for CDDP was 20 mg/m2/wk in association with 5-FU 400-500 mg/m2/wk and LV 500 mg/m2/wk. WHO criteria were used for evaluation of both toxicity and response. I…
Cytokeratin-18 fragments predict treatment response and overall survival in gastric cancer in a randomized controlled trial
2018
Background:Gastric cancer is common malignancy and exhibits a poor prognosis. At the time of diagnosis, the majority of patients present with metastatic disease which precludes curative treatment. Non-invasive biomarkers which discriminate early from advanced stages or predict the response to treatment are urgently required. This study explored the cytokeratin-18 fragment M30 and full-length cytokeratin-18 M65 in predicting treatment response and survival in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of advanced gastric cancer. Methods:Patients enrolled in the SUN-CASE study received sunitinib or placebo as an adjunct to standard therapy with leucovorin (Ca-folinate), 5-fluorouracil, and irinote…
Diagnosis of pre-sarcopenia from a single selectional crosscut at C3 region, using CT scans before radiotherapy
2019
Tracking of fruit, vegetables and unhealthy snacks consumption from childhood to adulthood (15 year period): does exposure to a free school fruit pro…
2019
Background The rationale for promoting increased consumption of fruit and vegetables (FV) at an early age is based on results from previous tracking-studies, indicating that dietary habits learned in childhood sustain into adulthood. Previous tracking studies have several limitations (e.g. low study sample, few repeated measurements and/or short a follow-up period). In addition, to our knowledge, no study has shown that a dietary intervention initiated in childhood affects tracking of dietary behaviour. The main objectives in this study were therefore to assess tracking of FV and unhealthy snacks in a large sample with multiple follow-up surveys over 15-years, and whether exposure to free s…
A Phase I Study of Cisplatinum plus 5-Fluorouracil in Modulation with Citrovorum Factor in Metastatic Colorectal Carcinoma
1991
A phase I study of 5-fluorouracil 600 mg/m2/week and folinic acid 500 mg/m2/week on day 1 and cisplatin administered weekly on day 2 was carried out on 30 patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma of which 20 patients were pretreated with 5-fluorouracil. The first group of patients received cisplatin at the dose of 5 mg/m2/week. Cisplatin was then escalated to 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 mg/m2/week for subsequent groups of patients. Gastrointestinal side-effects were the dose-limiting toxicity. A therapy related death was seen at the dose of 35 mg/m2/week of cisplatin. The maximally tolerated dose of cisplatin in combination with 5-fluorouracil and citrovorum factor is 20 mg/m2/week. The…
A manual therapy and home stretching program in patients with primary frozen shoulder contracture syndrome : a case series
2019
Abstract: Background Manual therapy has been demonstrated to reduce pain and improve function in patients with frozen shoulder contracture syndrome (FSCS), but no evidence exists to support one form of manual therapy over another. The purpose of this case series was to describe both short and long-term outcomes after a manual therapy program and home stretching exercises based on specific impairments in shoulder mobility and level of tissue irritability in patients with FSCS. Case Description Eleven patients with primary FSCS were treated with an individually tailored multimodal manual therapy approach once weekly for 12 visits coupled with home stretching exercises once a day, five days pe…
Impact of hypertonic saline nebulisation combined with oscillatory positive expiratory pressure on sputum expectoration and related symptoms in cysti…
2018
Abstract Objective To evaluate the impact of combining nebulised hyaluronic acid plus hypertonic saline (HA + HS) with oscillatory positive expiratory pressure (oscillatory-PEP) on sputum expectoration and related symptoms in adults with cystic fibrosis (CF). Design Randomised crossover trial. Setting Seven centres. Participants Twenty-two outpatients with CF. Interventions Usual care (HA + HS followed by autogenic drainage) and combined therapy (HA + HS with oscillatory-PEP followed by autogenic drainage]. Each treatment was performed for 5 days. Main outcome measures Sputum expectoration was measured during the nebulisation period (primary outcome), during autogenic drainage and for 24 ho…
Motor Action Execution in Reaction-Time Movements
2019
OBJECTIVE Reaction-time movements are internally planned in the brain. Presumably, proactive control in reaction-time movements appears as an inhibitory phase preceding movement execution. We identified the brain activity of reaction-time movements in close proximity to movement onset and compared it with similar self-paced voluntary movements without external command. DESIGN We recorded 18 healthy participants performing reaction-time and self-paced fast index finger abductions with 306-sensor magnetoencephalography and electromyography. Reaction-time movements were performed as responses to cutaneous electrical stimulation delivered on the hand radial nerve area. Motor field and movement-…
Measuring deterioration in international classification of functioning domains of people with multiple sclerosis who are ambulatory.
2007
Background and PurposeMeasures to detect important effects related to physical therapy interventions must be able to detect an important change. The purpose of this study was to select the most responsive physical functioning measures for multiple sclerosis (MS) using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a framework.SubjectsThe participants were 120 people with MS who were ambulatory from a population-based sample.MethodsPhysical functioning was assessed by quantitative clinical measures of activities (n=5) and body functions (n=7) and by self-reported performance in self-care, mobility, and domestic life domains in the activities and participation…
Effectiveness of Mirror Therapy for Subacute Stroke in Relation to Chosen Factors.
2016
Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of mirror therapy (MT) combined with comprehensive treatment and to investigate the possible relationships of functional state. Design Prospective, controlled trial of 60 stroke inpatients. Methods The Functional Index "Repty" (FIR) was an outcome measure to assess changes of independence in daily activities. The Frenchay Arm Test (FAT) and Motor Status Score were outcome measures to assess changes in hand function. Findings The analysis of pre- and posttest data indicated a significant improvement in hand function ([INCREMENT]FAT in the Mirror group p = .035, N = 30). Age factor indicated a significant change in relation to F…
